A Platform Redefining Education, Work and Life
Thiruvananthapuram: The great pace at which new-age technology is evolving has made ‘learnability’, up-skilling and adaptability the key requirements for the new-age workforce. It is against this backdrop that an institution like B-Hub, a co-learning and co-working space, becomes significant.
With continuous learning as its credo, B-Hub is poised to rewrite the present norms in career management and education
According to R Abhilash, Founder of B-Hub, it is the world’s first Uber-like learning platform, where, on the one hand, people share their acquired knowledge about the things they are passionate about; and on the other hand, people seeking that knowledge can come learn what they really love from people who practice the same. So how does B-Hub plan to make the transformation to continuous up-skilling seamless? Abhilash explains it simply through an analogy. “When three musicians come together, they form a music band. But when a software developer, a musician and a marketing expert join hands, they create Smule,” he says.
The rapid evolution of Information Technology does come with its own drawbacks. Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity or commonly known as the ‘VUCA’ period among technologists is one of the most-discussed issues.
“Companies conduct Learning and Development (L&D) sessions for their employees with an objective to keep them abreast of the latest changes in IT. However, what we often find is that such events fail to serve the purpose,” Abhilash says.
In this regard, B-Hub has three uniquely designed solutions for companies. L&D as a service is the main theme of all the three offerings – training programmes for existing employees, assisting in the hiring of new hands and Corporate Learning Credits (CLCs).
Corporate Training Programmes
B-Hub has already onboarded 3000 highly experienced knowledge evangelists and is steadily growing number. Depending on the prerequisites of the training programme, B-Hub assigns the right kind of resources for the job. “It is a classroom experience with one exception. The trainers are those people who think differently and come forward to do it because they love sharing their experiences with others. We have a bunch of experts who are excited about their respective fields,” he says. B-Hub has a unique commercial model of on-demand L&D programmes facilitated by sourcing trainer resources locally or through other B-Hub networks, making the learning process very cost-effective.
Corporate Learning Credits (CLCs)
Corporate Learning Credits (CLC) offered by B-Hub is a unique L&D model to enable continuous learning and prepare employees for varying skill demands like quick adaptability, learnability and social skills. Companies can buy Learning Credits from B-Hub and employees, based on their interest and skill, may avail/consume it. Sessions offered at B-Hub include technical and non-technical workshops, challenges, hackathons, conferences, blended learning, mentor clinics, community meetups, industry-powered sessions and courses. “The B-Hub assesses the participation and engagement quotient of individuals. A main objective of the sessions we organise is to help participants lose their inhibitions. And that is the key to acquiring new skills,” says Abhilash. Companies which have subscribed to CLC can avail the reports on each participant employee to evaluate the skill he or she has acquired.
How CLCs Work?
A company may purchase CLCs in blocks of hundreds. Employees or trainees at the company can use them and choose from a variety of learning sessions that happen at B-Hub. These learning and networking sessions help develop both hard and soft skills. Each credit will be valued at Rs. 300 per person and can be used to attend the learning sessions.
Co-Learning & Co-Working Space
B-Hub entered the knowledge ecosystem of Thiruvananthapuram as a growth enabler. The vision behind B-Hub, however, did not limit to enabling aspiring startups and companies. On the contrary, the team behind B-Hub reached out to varied knowledge assets and heterogeneous talents in the city, transforming it into rather unconventional knowledge machinery.
In a nutshell, one may not find a 10-year-old and a retired professional collaborating on work terms anywhere except in B-Hub. Also, it could be a sheer joy to watch a bunch of millennials mentoring retired hands on the nitty-gritty of new-age skills such as ‘How to be cyber-safe?’ or ‘How to use essential and commonly used mobile apps like Uber, Swiggy and different health apps?’ There are different kinds of people working and learning under the same roof. They aspire to become disruptors who can change the world,” Abhilash says. Hence, it is not surprising to spot artists, musicians, lawyers, designers, freelancers, entrepreneurial big guns or IT honchos sitting around a table, sipping espresso and engage in discussions. Within just 18 months of commencing operations, B-Hub has been identified as a reliable offline marketplace as it supports non-core and core business areas like productisation, marketing, business development, partnership, HR and even hiring.
“We believe in organically creating enterprising talents and entrepreneurs,” he adds. From Pottery to Python, around 3000 people shared knowledge through the platform, around 25,000 people learned from around 700-plus sessions conducted at B-Hub in the last 18 months.
“Problems with current education or vocational-training include lack of passion, purpose, relevance and inspiration. What differentiates man and machine is primarily passion and creativity,” he says. Learning programmes organised at B-Hub are categorised under 14 heads which further consist of 123 subjects and 1051 topics.
The categories include emerging technologies, vanila technologies, design, business, marketing, finance & accounting, office productivity, personal development, lifestyle, photography, health & fitness, music, arts and academics.
Now located at Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar in Thiruvananthapuram, B-Hub will soon open facilities in Bengaluru, Kochi, Coimbatore and Bahrain.
For the workforce of Industry 4.0 which is all about innovation and rapid technological advancements, it is imperative to become familiar with the culture of continuous learning. Participating in B-Hub’s events through sharing and collaboration help professionals positively reinforce the skills which are key to the new age.
