A Renowned Home-grown Herbal Brand
Kochi: For one whole century, K P Namboodiris has been the most trusted herbal products manufacturer in Kerala, especially in the field of oral care. The most famous tooth powder, Dantadhavana choornam, was prepared by the company’s founder K Pothayan Namboodiri based on a unique ayurvedic formula. From its humble beginnings as a small-scale herbal medicine unit, the Thrissur-based Ayurveda group, over the years, steered ahead of multinational companies in the business of oral, haircare, skincare and generic products.
“Our success formula is based on just three components; 100 per cent herbal products, trust of clients in our brand and our dedicated employees,” says K Bhavadasan, Managing Director, who belongs to the third generation of the family.
Bhavadasan was just a little over 30 when he took on the leadership of the business empire after the untimely demise of his father Raman Namboodiri in 2000. But without being weighed down by the burden of expectations, he excelled in his job and very soon led the brand to the level of a leading name in the segment. Introducing automation, he changed the face of the company by building a sophisticated, computer-controlled-machinery-enabled factory, increasing production to suit the requirements of the clients.
In 2006, the iconic Dantadhavana choornam was given a modern twist by introducing it in the form of tooth paste, which became a huge success. “Our major clients are spread across South India, GCC countries, Malaysia and Singapore. We export to Europe, too, though not on a large scale,” he explains. The firm’s products are classified into four segments – oral care, skin care, hair care and generic products like herbal mix for drinking water and pure sacred ash.
The growth of a small ayurvedic unit started by a single man, who used to grind tooth powder in his stone grinder, to a 380-employee-strong company owes it all to trust, believes Bhavadasan, who, apart from the herbal products firm, also looks after their venture in the hospitality sector, Devaragam Resorts, and a wedding hall in Guruvayur.
As part of the expansion plans, he next aims to spread the name and fame of K P Namboodiris across the globe, especially in Europe.
