WE Summit: Infrastructure Support Facility for Women Entrepreneurs Announced
Kochi: The Kerala Government on Thursday announced infrastructure support facility for women entrepreneurs at the Garment Manufacturing and Export Zone at Angamaly. This was disclosed at the Women Entrepreneurs’ (WE) Summit 2015 organised by the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) under the Women Entrepreneurship (WE) Mission Kerala programme.
In his inaugural address, State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the Women Entrepreneurs Collaborating and Networking (WECAN) initiative of KSIDC would give a new impetus to the existing women entrepreneurs in the State.
“Kerala has always been in the forefront of educating women and initiatives like this would help bridge the gap and bring in a positive trend,” he said. “The State Government would offer support to protect the local industry by building the necessary basic infrastructure,” Chandy said.
During the inaugural session, the Chief Minister handed over the first financial assistance sanction letter under the WE Mission programme to Ms. Noorjahan, MD of Falcon Garments.
Delivering the presidential address, Industries & IT Minister P K Kunhalikutty said MSMEs in Kerala are growing well and it’s time for women entrepreneurs to move up to the next level through this mission mode activity. He also added that Kerala would soon lead the country in per capita income.
Industries & IT Principal Secretary P H Kurien IAS said WECAN initiative aims to identify and help support 1,000 women entrepreneurs across the State to scale up existing enterprises. The support would be in the form of infrastructure, mentoring, networking and facilitating financial options.
Former Governor & Union Minister Margaret Alva, in her special address, appreciated the WECAN initiative saying that Kerala had a tradition of empowering women and this initiative would help women entrepreneurs.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering, KSIDC Managing Director Dr. M Beena IAS said the WE Mission aims to empower women and bring several welfare and social schemes for women under one umbrella. “KSIDC has tied up with eight partner institutions to support this initiative,” she added.
Hibi Eden MLA; Patricia Barandun, Deputy Representative, UN Women - India; Shalini Warrier, COO, Federal Bank; Rajneesh Kumar, Vice-President, Walmart India and K B Valsalakumari, former ED, Kudumbashree offered felicitations.
More than 1,500 invited women entrepreneurs from all over Kerala participated in the WE Summit.
