AUTO ANNA’S WORDS OF WISDOM
Kochi: Trying to sell a great product with a bad attitude is as good as trying to market a substandard item. Right attitude should be the mantra for young Indians who wish to tap global opportunities. The amazing Annadurai, an autorickshaw driver from Chennai aka ‘Auto Anna’, who spoke at the 38th National Management Convention organised by Kerala Management Association (KMA), too, put across the same message.
But why would an autorickshaw driver deliver a talk at an annual management convention? Why not? Even if it wasn’t for Annadurai’s thoughtful and novel ways which make him stand out among the thousands of others who do the same job, there are hardly any jobs or sectors which fail to adapt the best of management practices. KMA proved it by bringing on stage Annadurai who spoke at the session titled ‘The Growing Young India: It’s All about Change in Attitude’
Auto Anna managed to put across two simple messages to the audience: “If you are a plumber, be the best plumber in the town and the status attached to a profession is mere social construct” and the ‘frog in the well’ and ‘chalta hai’ attitudes are two things which Indians can longer afford to maintain’’. “We should understand that customer is the king. This attitude along with the right skills will bring you customers from across the globe. It is definitely our behaviour and attitude that matter,” said the 32-year-old Annadurai.
Annadurai has over 10,000 followers on Facebook. He has addressed nearly 40 different corporate events and spoke at six TED talks at various locations in India. He has been hailed as the doyen of customer centricity and, according to him, it works better than any other product marketing strategy. Back home in Chennai, the auto driver enjoys something of a celebrity status, mainly for the range of services his rickshaw offers to passengers. The passengers of his unique autorickshaw can choose from dozens of magazines and number of newspapers, being offered inside the vehicle, to read. If that’s not enough, he also provides free WiFi onboard and a tab just in case the passenger’s phone runs out of battery.
