Kannur: Commercial flight operations from Kannur International Airport, Kerala’s fourth international airport coming up at Mattannur in the district, will begin next September, according to Pinarayi Vijayan, State Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister announced this while addressing the 8th general body meeting of the Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL) here the other day. Stating that there is good progress in the work of the Rs. 1,892-crore airport, Pinarayi Vijayan said that the work of the runway and integrated terminal would be completed by January. The Chief Minister told the meeting that measures for acquiring land for the purpose of increasing the length of runway to 4000 metres from 3050 metres are progressing fast.
X-ray machines, baggage handling system, aerobridge and escalators will be commissioned by January 2018. Navigation and Instrument Landing Systems will be put in place by August 2018. Pinarayi Vijayan said that international and domestic airlines have expressed interest to operate services from the new airport. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has already granted permission to Jet Airways and GoAir for operating daily services to Abu Dhabi and Dammam respectively, he added.
