Menlo Park, an initiative of Magic Planet – situated at KINFRA Film and Video Park, Kazhakkoottam in Thiruvananthapuram – in association with Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and UNICEF, was inaugurated by Dr. T M Thomas Isaac, Finance Minister, Kerala. On the occasion, Minister Isaac said Menlo Park will enable children to understand scientific principles in the most practical and creative manner. ‘‘Moreover, the magical experiments at the park will help erase the belief in manmade miracles and superstitions existing in society,’’ he added.
At the Park, designed in memory of Thomas Alva Edison, popularly known as ‘The Magician of Menlo Park’, magic and science join hands to showcase wonders for students, who can also try out various scientific experiments. This would enhance their interest in science. Students can also participate in a quiz arranged at ‘W5’ section. Four teams with two members each can take part. The teams will be named after Einstein, Edison, Galileo and Newton. Winners will get prizes.
Interesting facts about the life and work of scientists like Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein, Madam Curie, Issac Newton, C V Raman and Archimedes are also displayed. The Magical Science Gallery at the Park will display Edison’s inventions and experiments. The Park is designed in such a way that children can engage in learning filled with magic. Numerous images are on display, which will help even primary school students understand scientific principles with ease.
Magic Academy patron Adoor Gopalakrishnan delivered the presidential address at the inaugural function. W5 – the quiz corner – was inaugurated by Christian Eider of UNICEF. Job Zachariah, Chief, Field Office, UNICEF; Sugatha Roy of UNICEF and Krishnamoorthy, former DGP were among those dignitaries present.
