Thrissur: Rekha Karthikeyan, the first and the only fisherwoman in the country to secure the licence for deep-sea fishing, has bagged the first ESAF ‘Sthree Ratna’ award instituted to honour the outstanding achievement in the area of women empowerment.
This was announced here the other day by K Paul Thomas, Founder, ESAF and Mereena Paul, the Chairman of ESAF Cooperative and Co-founder of ESAF.
The award instituted by ESAF Cooperative consists of a plaque, citation and a cash prize of Rs. one lakh.
Rekha, also a member of the ESAF Sangam, has been active in deep-sea fishing for the last 10 years, along with her husband Karthikeyan. They are the first couple engaged in deep-sea fishing in the country. Rekha hails from Engandiyur in Thrissur district.
The award was presented to her by M C Josephine, Chairperson, Kerala Women’s Commission, at a function held on March 9 at Lulu International Convention Centre here, organised in connection with the Women’s Day Celebrations by the ESAF Cooperative.
